 Rural Farmhouse

A rural farmhouse in East  Lothian, centred around a walled garden to the south and with open views out to the Firth of Forth to the north.

We were invited to produce a garden that complemented and enhanced the style and period of the house and to bring this neglected garden back to life.
A former parking area to the front of the house was converted to a large, gravelled, formal terrace, the full width of the house, with box lined borders planted with several varieties of old English roses and herbaceous perennials. The walled garden beyond was, in part, designed as an ornamental herbaceous perennial garden naturalistically planted to give a colourful and dynamic vista from the front of the house, whilst behind we reinstated an old orchard that we under planted with wildflowers and placed at its heart a circular seating area around a cast iron fountain.
Around the walled garden a rough area of brambles and nettles outside an outbuilding was converted to a cobbled courtyard from which a cool, shaded walk, under mature sycamores leads to a new fruit and vegetable garden. Close to the house a large dining terrace was created to take advantage of the last of the days sunshine and the magnificent views over the Firth of Forth.
